Just imagine where you will go! Begin your underwater explorations by enrolling in a NAUI Scuba Diver class. Take your first step to earning your certification. This is our entry-level certification course where you will learn the fundamental knowledge and skills to safely dive in open water. Certification is a multi-step process, this course includes the academics, eLearning, and pool training. Open Water Certification dives are a separate class and are required to complete your full certification. Private Classes are available upon request. Includes eLearning and use of all equipment needed. Personal equipment can be purchased as well. Ask your instructor for options. Open Water Certification dives are not included in this portion of the class.

The NAUI Open Water Scuba Diver Program at Scuba Connection is designed to provide a safe, enjoyable, and confidence-building introduction to the underwater world. Throughout your training, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and judgment needed to dive safely while learning from experienced NAUI Professionals in a supportive, small-class environment.

During this course you will learn:

  • Modern scuba equipment and how it functions
  • Dive physics and physiology
  • Safe diving practices and problem prevention
  • Underwater communication
  • Dive planning fundamentals
  • Environmental awareness and responsible diving
  • Essential scuba skills practiced in a controlled pool environment

Every skill is introduced step-by-step in the comfort of our heated confined water training facility before progressing to your Open Water Certification Dives.

Before Your First Pool Session

Prior to entering the water, you will attend a required orientation with your instructor. This meeting is typically held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM during the week before your course begins.

During this orientation you will:

  • Meet your instructor and classmates
  • Review the complete course schedule and certification process
  • Receive an overview of the NAUI training system
  • Be professionally sized for your scuba equipment
  • Learn how each piece of equipment works
  • Select your personal scuba mask and snorkel to keep
  • Receive instruction on proper equipment care and maintenance
  • Activate your NAUI eLearning materials

This orientation helps ensure your equipment fits properly before your first dive and allows you to begin training with confidence.

Cohort 1

Tuesday & Thursday Evenings

  • 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Saturday

  • 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Ideal for students who want to complete their certification efficiently while reinforcing skills throughout the week.

Cohort 2

Saturday Only

  • 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Perfect for students with busy weekday schedules who prefer weekend-only training.

Your Certification Path

Becoming a certified diver is completed in three simple steps.

Step 1 – Academic Training

Complete your NAUI eLearning modules and instructor-led virtual classroom discussions to build the knowledge needed for safe scuba diving.

Step 2 – Pool Training (Included with this course)

Develop and master all required scuba skills in our heated pool under the direct supervision of your NAUI Instructor.

Step 3 – Open Water Certification Dives (Separate registration required)

Complete your four open water certification dives either:

  • Locally in New Jersey
  • During one of Scuba Connection's hosted travel adventures
  • At another approved training location with prior arrangements

Upon successful completion of all three steps, you will earn your internationally recognized NAUI Open Water Scuba Diver Certification, allowing you to dive anywhere in the world with a buddy.

Open Water Certification Costs

The total cost of certification varies based on where you choose to complete your Open Water Certification Dives. Students may complete their checkout dives locally or join one of Scuba Connection's hosted dive trips, providing the flexibility to finish certification in the environment that best fits their schedule and travel plans.

Skill Level

Beginner

No previous scuba experience is required.

Students should be comfortable in the water and able to:

  • Swim at a basic recreational level
  • Demonstrate water comfort at the surface
  • Complete an underwater swim of 50 feet
  • Successfully complete a 10-minute survival float or survival swim as required by NAUI Standards

Materials Included

Your NAUI eLearning access code will be activated after your orientation meeting with your instructor. This allows you to begin the academic portion of your training before your first pool session, helping you maximize your time in the water and arrive prepared for each lesson.
